Funding Civic

We know the ‘civic reach’ of universities is wide and diverse.  But do we have a rich understanding of how this ‘civic-ness’ is funded? Is it largely through competitive UK-wide research and innovation grants or more locally sourced investment? How much is driven by entrepreneurial or opportunistic individuals, or more coordinated university commitments? How do universities navigate the system, and where are the funding gaps holding back our civic potential? What new funding pipelines might support universities to build and enhance their civic offer?

As part of our work to inform emerging government strategies around place and levelling up, we are aiming to get a richer picture of how universities fund civic activities, as well as help to identify barriers and blind spots in the system.

Your invitation

In order to help inform this, we are planning to run a virtual roundtable to discuss these questions with members of the Civic University Network. The roundtable will take place from 09:30 on Wednesday 8th December and we would be delighted if you or a colleague could attend.

In preparation for the workshop we have prepared a short briefing paper, where we have attempted to describe some of the key sources of funding (and if and how the outcomes of that funding are assessed). We would really appreciate it if you could review this summary for us, and answer a few questions below in advance of the roundtable, to enable us to maximise the usefulness of the meeting.
