The Geography of Higher Education in England and Wales

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published their report "The Geography of Higher Education in England and Wales" in October 2024. The report examines how universities across England and Wales can better contribute to regional development by embedding a territorial dimension in their research, innovation and engagement activities.

Focusing on the National Civic Impact Accelerator (NCIA) led by the Civic University Network, it highlights how universities act as anchor institutions, working with local partners to address societal challenges, support SMEs and strengthen entrepreneurial ecosystems. The report offers evidence and recommendations for policymakers and university leaders on how to deepen civic impact, improve local partnerships and ensure higher education helps reduce spatial inequalities and build more resilient communities.
