Enhancing the Student Civic Experience

The Enhancing the Student Civic Experience report, developed by the Civic University Network and partners, sets out a bold vision for embedding civic engagement at the heart of university life.

The report calls for universities to fully adopt a truly civic approach, designing and delivering the student civic experience through:

  • Formal teaching and learning
  • Campus-based extracurricular activities
  • Community-based projects and partnerships

It argues that every degree and apprenticeship, regardless of subject, should enable students to develop their civic identities through sustained opportunities for civic learning and participation. The aim is to prepare students for lifelong active citizenship and community involvement.

Student Hubs Legacy Resources

Student Hubs was a pioneering charity that partnered with UK universities to champion student social action, delivering both in-curricular and extracurricular activities that empowered students to engage with the issues that mattered most to them.

Following their closure in January 2025, the Civic University Network is proud to permanently host their legacy resources, ensuring their impact continues across the sector.

  • For universities: Toolkits and reports to help embed social action in teaching, volunteering, and community partnerships.
  • For students: Self-guided resources to develop skills in leadership, advocacy, and volunteering.
  • For the third sector: Guides for working with universities and supporting early career starters.

Access a range of toolkits, webinars, and practical guides to embed social action at every level of university life, empowering students to become active citizens for life.
