About Student Hubs
Student Hubs was a charity founded in 2007 by students who wanted to provide a space to increase collaboration and conversation around social action at their university and find their place within the community. We supported university students to engage in the issues most important to them, with a focus on accessibility of opportunities, skill development, and community cohesion. Throughout our 16 year history, we reached over 20,000 students across 10 Hub locations, over 100,000 students through training, events and conferences, and 1200 community organisations, including reaching over 16,000 community members.
You can see our theory of change demonstrated in the video below:

Following our organisational closure in January 2025, we developed a series of reports, toolkits, webinars and resources for universities, students and third sector organisations to use, which we provide for free below and with the following usage statement:
'This resource has been created by student social action charity Student Hubs. The aim of these resources is to support the delivery of high quality student social action. Please use, apply and share these resources as you see fit and credit Student Hubs as relevant to recognise the support our frameworks and resources have provided for your activity. For Universities
Our resources for universities have been designed to be used by individuals and teams across the higher education sector to practically embed social action within their in-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Our resources include a report on the case for social action; toolkits and webinars on student leadership, working with community organisations and delivering social action; and resources for universities to audit their practices and delivery.
For Students
Our resources for students have been designed to be used as self-guided activities which universities can share or signpost their student cohorts towards.
These resources are based from delivering activities with students including supporting student leaders, delivering volunteering, and training students. They include a guide to volunteering, a guide to incubation, workbooks on campaigning and advocacy and student leadership, and a self-audit on student skills.
For the Third Sector
As a charity we had a history of supporting early career starters, graduates, interns and pushing an innovative culture as an organisation.
We were proud to be part of the Escape the City Top 100 list for two years running (2021 and 2022), and we have created resources which universities can signpost to their local Voluntary, Charity and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector about applying our innovative practices, or for considering their approach to supporting early career starters.
About this page
At the Civic University Network and its National Civic Impact Accelerator Programme, we recognise the profound and enduring influence that engaged citizens have within their communities. We firmly believe that universities are pivotal in inspiring individuals, teams, and systems to better serve their localities.
By providing a platform for these invaluable resources, we aim to help secure the strong legacy of Student Hubs' impactful work, and offer the Higher Education sector a range of free, effective tools to drive positive change.
Our goal is to empower universities to transform lives and places through a truly civic approach, which cannot be achieved without enhancing the student civic experience.
